HOW SUBWAY CAR LIGHTS WORK

This page is best viewed at 800x600 resolution

The Train CREW uses the ON/OFF Buttons to control the main lights for inside the cars. The buttons control low voltage power to the Main Light Relay.
When the MLR is energized, the Auxillary Light Relay becomes energized which closes the high voltage contact between the HV feed and the main lights.
The Emergency Light Relay is energized as long as the HV is powering the light. If the HV is lost (power outage or third rail gap) the relay drops which closes the LV contact to the emergency lights.
When the main lights are off, the LV second contact is open, breaking the power to the emergency lights.
