The International Year of Astronomy 2009 The vision of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 is to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery. All humans should realize the impact of astronomy and basic sciences on our daily lives, and understand better how scientific knowledge can contribute to a more equitable and peaceful society.
Order your Galileoscope™ today! Only US $15
The Galileoscope™: An IYA2009 Cornerstone Project The Galileoscope™ is a high-quality, low-cost telescope kit developed for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 by a team of leading astronomers, optical engineers, and science educators. No matter where you live, with this easy-to-assemble, 50-mm (2-inch) diameter, 25- to 50-power achromatic refractor, you can see the celestial wonders that Galileo Galilei first glimpsed 400 years ago and that still delight stargazers today. These include lunar craters and mountains, four moons circling Jupiter, the phases of Venus, Saturn's rings, and countless stars invisible to the unaided eye.
It's a kit that requires NO tools and can be assembled in a few minutes.

You may also donate a Galileoscope™ for only US $12.50 to a random school. When you Give a Galileoscope, no matter how few or how many telescopes you donate, the price is a flat U.S. $12.50 each. That's right: You can donate Galileoscopes at the lowest available price and pay no shipping charges, taxes, or other fees! How can IYA do this? By aggregating the donations. You don't specify who receives your donation, or even which country gets the telescopes. Donations will accumulate throughout IYA2009, and then we'll make bulk shipments of Galileoscopes to a diverse group of underserved recipient organizations throughout the world.

So, for a total of $27.50, you can have one for yourself and donate one to a random school.

Bad Astronomy! The homepage for Bad Astronomy! - Phil Plait.- Webmster
As an astronomer, teacher, lecturer and all-around science junkie, I am exposed to all sorts of people and their ideas about what goes on in the sky around them. I have been delighted to find that most people are very curious about the night (and day!) sky, but unfortunately a lot of misinformation is spread about astronomy. Sometimes this information is just plain silly, but many times it makes just enough sense that people believe it.

The folks who de-planeted Pluto
and made it a dwarf!, Dopey?

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) was founded in 1919. Its mission is to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy in all its aspects through international cooperation. Its individual members are professional astronomers all over the World, at the Ph.D. level or beyond and active in professional research and education in astronomy.

Now, Eris (from the Greek), a personification of strife and discord, has been found to be 4% larger and 30% more massive than Pluto. So it's now considered the 10th largest planet/dwarf planet in the Solar System. Talk about an approriate name!
In June 2008, the IAU defined a new object, Plutoid, which is:

"Celestial bodies in orbit around the Sun at a distance greater than that of Neptune that have sufficient mass for their self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that they assume a hydrostatic equilibrium (near-spherical) shape, and that have not cleared the neighborhood around their orbit."

The two known and named Plutoids are Pluto and Eris. It is expected that more Plutoids will be named as science progresses and new discoveries are made, for example, when the New Horizons mission arrives at the Kuiper Belt region in 2015.

Build the USS Enterprise From the FAQ:
Q: BTE-Dan, do you really think it’s technically possible to build the USS Enterprise over the next two decades?
A: Yes. It’s within our technological reach to build a full-sized Enterprise with 1g gravity. This Gen1 Enterprise can go on missions to key points of interest in our solar system, like Mars and Venus. It will be the biggest ship of any kind ever built by humans, and it will be larger than the tallest building in the world. It’s possible to build the Enterprise, and it would be a monumental achievement for us humans who inhabit the planet earth.

Put Time into Perspective

If the Earth formed at midnight and the present moment is the next midnight, 24 hours later, modern humans have been around since 11:59:59pm—1 second. And if human history itself spans 24 hours from one midnight to the next, 14 minutes represents the time since Christ.

Understanding Science To understand what science is, just look around you. What do you see? Perhaps, your hand on the mouse, a computer screen, papers, ballpoint pens, the family cat, the sun shining through the window …. The Restaurantby George Becker

I received word that George passed away in February 2012. This section will remain in his memory.

"The Restaurant" is a narrative of life in the North Bronx during the 1940's , as viewed by the author. It centers around a restaurant that was owned and operated by his dad at the Woodlawn Subway Station. It also has a lot to say about the neighborhood near the Mosholu Parkway Subway station, where he and his family lived, and a has a few words about the Yankee Stadium. So, we will be taking a ride on the IRT over Jerome Avenue to a time and place where boys had to wear knickers, and were told that when they grew up they could wear long pants, a place where street games and chalked up streets were the norm.

This book was formerly published as

and has been re-released as
The More You Do The Better You Feel: How to Overcome Procrastination and Live a Happier Life.

Author David Parker, a friend of the JoeKorNer: says in the introduction:

While working at my day job as an administrative assistant in midtown Manhattan, co-workers passing my desk would sometimes give me a wink and a nod and ask, “So, how’s that book on overcoming procrastination coming along? I’ll bet you just can’t find the time to get around to it!” You wouldn’t believe some of the good-natured ribbing I endured.

ISW Studios is in the heart of the US Virgin Islands on the island of St. Thomas. Our new facility was “purpose built” from the ground up. No expense was spared. With 25 rooms in Phase 1, we have put together a creative haven of over 5500 square feet. It's a Caribbean recording studio for serious artists. Gary is the President. On our 2008 cruise to the Caribbean, we met Gary for lunch near the cruise ship terminal.

Unfortunately I learned that Gary passed away around New Year's Day 2013. Here is what I posted on his Facwebook wall:

Rest in peace, my friend. This is a shock, to say the least.
I met Gary in the late 1990s when we began work on what is now the timekeeping system for the Transit Authority in New York. I learned more than I needed to know program development in those years. I think Gary learned more about what the users are saying from me and my group that came form the Buses department. We brought him to a depot to see what goes on behind the scenes in getting service out, he got an appreciation for what goes on. A year or so after I retired, my wife and I took a cruise that had a stop at USVI and I called Gary from the ship and we met for lunch at a place that only locals would know. Had a great time there.

The Root Beer Links Root Beer has been my favorite soft drink for many years. It probably goes back to a day trip I remember with a summer camp to a Wild West (perhaps the one near Netcong, NJ - how long has that been around?) park. The root beer was served in frozen mugs. That impressed me, I've been hooked since. My favorites are Stewart's (who also makes a cream soda) and Dad's. This page lists over 500 brands. Wild West City is still in operation in 2004. 2017 Season With the strong performances of Judge, Sanchez, and Bird (94 homers total), some trades, and clutch performances by many, the team made it to game 7 of the ALCS via the wild card game. This put them 2 years ahead of the planned return to World Series winning seasons. Yankees & Houston win Houston beatsYankees 4-3 games. Home team wins every game! Astros win their first WS, beating Dodgers in seven games.
2016 Season

Red Sox win east
Baltimore and Toronto take wildcards

Yankees report card (84-78)
The good:
Gregorius and Castro were the first keystone combo teammates to each hit 20 homers in Yankee history
Gary Sanchez had a spectaular rookie season with 20 homers in only 50+ games
The middle bullpen wasn't an issue before Miller and Chapman were traded
The Yankees finished above .500 thanks to better play after the trades
The team hit 189 homers
Only three catchers in MLB history had hit 20+ home runs in at least 10 seasons. Brian McCann is now the fourth

The bad:
The other rookies, not so much
Beltran, who was traded in August led the team in homers
Betances was overused and lost his confidence toward the end of the season
A-Rod and Teixeira didn't hit as they did last season
The middle bullpen was 50-50 before Miller and Chapman were traded
Ellsbury, Gardner, Hicks, and Headly didn't perform well on offense
The Yankees looked so bad at the trade deadline, that they traded away Beltran, Nova, Miller, and Chapman.
Starters gave up 140 home runs
Yankees scored 680 runs vs. giving up 702 (-22 difference)

The Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians in seven games
The Cubs hadn't won since 1908 and the Indians haven't won since 1948.

2015 Season Blue Jays win east
Boston in last place.

The Yankees (87-75) were in first place for much of the season, but collapsed after the September trade deadline and wound up with the first wildcard. The Mets and Blue Jays both made trades that allowed them to gain first place in the east of each league.

Houston beat them at the stadium 3-0, when the Yankees could only get 3 hits.
Kansas City Royals beat the NY Mets 4-1.
Mets were out hit and out managed.
2014 Season Orioles win east
Boston in last place.

The Yankees lost 4/5 of their starting rotation and still managed an 84-78 second place record.
The signings of Beltran and McCann didn't work out as neither lived up to their 2013 records, till near the end of the season.
Texieria didn't play to his record either and with the loss of Cano and A-Rod suspended, the offense sputtered.
Jeter's last season didn't disappoint - got a walk-off RBI in his last Yankee Stadium game and an RBI on an infield hit in his last at bat in Boston.
San Francisco Giants win the World Series
2013Season The Yankees lost a net of over 170 home runs between non-signings, known and unknown injuries.
The pitching staff was inconsistant, especially in games where the offense was MIA.
However, my respect goes out to Manager Joe Girardi for keeping the team in the playoff hunt down to four games left.
All good things must come to an end:
Mariano Riveara announced his retirement at the beginning of the year.
Andy Pettitte announced his retirement two days before his last game at the Stadium (a loss).
This was only the second time since 1995 and the first since the new stadium opened that the Yankees did not make the playoffs.

The Definitive Case for Universal DH

January 21, 2016
The Conclusion (before you read the whole article)
More than 40 years after its introduction, the DH is still decried by some as a gimmick, when, in fact, there is nothing more gimmicky than making pitchers do something they are untrained and unqualified to do. When Commissioner Rob Manfred was asked about the DH rule potentially being adopted by the NL last year, this is what he said:

"Not having NL pitchers hit would deprive us of the entertainment Bartolo Colon has given us this year."

Yogi Bera Museum
We visited the Yogi Bera museum in 1999. It was well worth the trip to Montclair, NJ. Adjacent to the Yogi Berra field for the university baseball team, it contains a history of baseball, the Yankees, and Yogi himself.

Some of the highlights were There is a theater built to resemble the Yankee Stadium stands. Below the screen is a painting of the stadium score board (the one from the 1960's) for Yogi Berra Day.

This film is based on an alternative timeline to the Mercury-Gemini-Apollo era of reality - it is based on the premise that all that had been proposed in the early 1950's in Colliers actually came to pass - and sooner than they expected.

I think the 1952 version of War of the Worlds was the second feature. I found this link in alt.sic.time-travel. It links to an advertisment for a video of the story of the restoration of the prop used in the movie. This is NOT an endorsement, nor does the JoeKorNer receive any compensation for this link.

Five Leadership Lessons From Captain James T. Kirk By Alex Knapp, Forbes Staff Science writer.
Captain James T. Kirk is one of the most famous Captains in the history of Starfleet. There’s a good reason for that. He saved the planet Earth several times, stopped the Doomsday Machine, helped negotiate peace with the Klingon Empire, kept the balance of power between the Federation and the Romulan Empire, and even managed to fight Nazis. On his five-year mission commanding the U.S.S. Enterprise, as well as subsequent commands, James T. Kirk was a quintessential leader, who led his crew into the unknown and continued to succeed time and time again.
