100 years of
the New York City Subway
The original companies (1904 - 1940)
The city starts operation (1932 - 1940)
The Board of Transportation (1932 - 1953)
The NYC Transit Authority (1953 - 1968)
New York State MTA (1968)
In the mid-1970s, the City
wanted the M logo modified for the subways and buses
Around 1998, the MTA
family replaced the M with the "Pac-Man" logo
Each agency then included MTA
in their name, though for legal purposes, the original names remain.
